Department for Maritime and Transport Law

 

From its foundation, the Department for Maritime and Transport Law seeks to be a focal point for Maritime law research, as well as a facilitator of cooperation between academics and practitioners.

As a compulsory fourth year course (VIII semester) of the Faculty of Law, University of Zagreb, the main course on Maritime and Transport Law offers a range of subjects for students wishing to specialize in Shipping law, general Transport law, Insurance law and related matters. It also provides an opportunity to study comprehensively both the private and public law aspects of international Maritime law within the commercial and international trade law setting.

For the students wishing to broaden their knowledge in the above named matters, the Department offers a non-compulsory course on Insurance Law, which is held in the IX semester.

The Department consist of three professors and two associates:

Faculty of Law

 

One of the main aims of the Faculty of Law of the University of Zagreb is to foster excellence through international cooperation. The Faculty of Law, University of Zagreb, was established in 1776 and while it remains proud of its fine tradition, it seeks to be a modern institution engaged in cutting-edge research and education. It is equipped with a modern library, which offers not only over 400,000 volumes, but also access to numerous international databases, and houses a European Documentation Centre.

The Faculty of Law offers seven different types of study programme - three in law, three in social work and one in public administration. In the field of law these programmes are: an integrated BA-MA general law programme (300 ECTS), advanced master’s programmes (120 ECTS), and a doctoral programme (180 ECTS). Each of the levels offers the opportunity for specialisation in a particular legal field such as constitutional and administrative law, civil law, criminal law, commercial law, labour law and social security law, tax law, international law and European law. In the field of social work the Faculty offers a bachelor (240 ECTS), master's (60 ECTS) and doctoral (180 ECTS) programmes.  

The Faculty of Law has strong international relations and cooperates with many institutions and individuals worldwide, especially those in the EU and the region. It presents a welcoming environment for international students.

University of Zagreb

 

 

The University of Zagreb (1669) is the oldest and biggest university in South-Eastern Europe. As a comprehensive public Central European university, University of Zagreb offers education and research and in all scientific fields (arts, biomedicine, biotechnology, engineering, humanities, natural sciences and social sciences) and a broad spectrum of courses at all study levels, from undergraduate to postgraduate. With 29 Faculties, 3 Art Academies and the University Centre for Croatian Studies it is the flagship educational institution in the country, a place where more than 7900 teachers and 72480 students develop knowledge and acquire skills.

The University excels not only in teaching, but also in research, contributing with over 50 percent to the annual research output in Croatia and 80 percent of scientific productivity of all Croatian universities. The central strategic issue of the future development of the University of Zagreb is for it to be a research oriented institution with teaching of high quality. Accordingly, the focus will be on master and doctoral programs, encompassing all fields of science and art, boosting transdiciplinarity and interdisciplinarity as well as translational research, nurturing the culture of innovation and transfer of knowledge. This should result in better intersectorial harmonization on local and regional levels.

University of Zagreb is in the process of building a new Campus “Borongaj” which is the biggest investment in Croatian education in the last 150 years, and when it is built (finished) it will be used by more than 20 000 students. The Campus was officially opened on October 12th 2007 and for now it hosts 4 university units: Centre for Croatian Studies, Faculty of Education and Rehabilitation, Faculty of Traffic Engineering and Faculty of Economics and Business (only vocational study programmes in economics and business). Five other faculties are also planning to relocate to the Campus in the next few years. Besides the (re)construction of university buildings, Campus will be a home to a sports centre, student residence hall and a number of institutes.
